City to commence with important repair work to Tafelberg Road

The City of Cape Town’s Urban Mobility Directorate hereby advises the residents, road users and businesses of the road rehabilitation project to take place along Tafelberg Road, from Kloof Nek Road to the Lower Cableway Station located in the Table Mountain National Park. The work is planned to commence this week, for a period of 12 months, from sunrise to sunset, Monday to Friday. No work is planned for Sundays, on public holidays, or at night. 

'The City is undertaking the rehabilitation of Tafelberg Road to ensure that all visitors to the Table Mountain National Park and the aerial cableway can do so safely. Apart from those visiting the cableway, many hikers park along this road to access the hiking trails on the mountain, or some visitors go up there simply to admire the view. Thus, it is of utmost importance that we undertake this work,' said the City's Mayoral Committee Member for Urban Mobility, Councillor Rob Quintas.

Tafelberg Road is the main access route to the Table Mountain National Park and the Table Mountain aerial cableway, and carries a lot of traffic all-year round.

The rehabilitation work is intended to:

• Restore and upgrade the road
• Rehabilitate the parking facilities
• Rehabilitate the stormwater infrastructure
• Restore and maintain the non-motorised transport facilities such as the formal walkways in and around the cableway
• Restore the embankment retaining structures
  
  'We are aware that the project will cause some inconvenience, and as such, we will undertake the work in sections to minimise the impact on those who need to use the road.
  
   
  
  'On weekdays, during the construction period, traffic accommodation will be implemented on portions of the road by way of lane closures. A stop-and-go system will be implemented along sections of no more than 500m at a time. This is to ensure access to this global tourist attraction. It is important that all of those wanting to use this road take into consideration that there will be some traffic delays and longer travelling times.'
  
   
  
  'Also, the contractor will be working in confined spaces to accommodate as much foot traffic and parked vehicles in the area. We thank the public for their patience and support while this important project is underway. We also want to urge all road users and pedestrians to adhere to the signage and personnel's instructions,' said Councillor Quintas.
